Not unusual I know, but. The character Richard Zeeman in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter books is one I didn't like when he was introduced. I didn't really care about him until The Killing Dance (Book 6), and I didn't really love him until Blue Moon (Book 8).
